Russell Howell ( story )
This story was emailed in by Russell Howell, who gives his memories of the college as well as his escapades post Seaford College.
At Seaford I was Howell II. My brother Dan, was Howell I. I left Seaford in 1966 after my O Levels and came to live with my dad in Phoenix, Arizona. After a year of high school in Phoenix, which was quite easy thanks to Seaford, I received an appointment with the US Military Academy at West Point.
I graduated in 1971 and was commissioned to the infantry. I served as a mechanized infantry platoon leader in Baumholder, Germany and then as a platoon leader and staff officer with the 1st Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Vicenza, Italy. Then back to the States and a series of assignments as a company commander and staff officer in Fort Bliss, Texas.
The Army then sent me off to learn Russian and then to the Pentagon and finally up here to Alaska (I had told my assignments officer I wanted to go to 'the Northwest' - I had in mind Seattle! - he sent me to Alaska, the most northern and western posting!!).
I retired from the US Army in 1992 and am now working as the director of the American Russian Centre. We do business and management training for Russian business people and entrepreuners in the Russian Far East. I am married and have 3 kids who are all now making their own way in the world.
My brother, Dan, left Seaford in 1965 also moved to Phoenix. Hew went to college there for a while and was drafted. After two tours in Vietnam, he returned to the states and actually lived in England for a few years. He went back into the service for another 9 years and in 1984 returned to civilian life. He attended university in Kentucky, obtaining a Masters Degree in computer programming, taught for a while at university and finally ended up owning his own company in Evansville, Indiana, creating and installing iventory control systems for a variety of grocery chains and private companies. He is also married and has 3 children.
I must say that Seaford gave me a first class foundation that has served me well over the years. If anyone has heard from Tom Keane, who was at Seaford at the same time, I'd love to catch up. Best regards to all. If there are any Old Seafordians in Alaska, feel free to contact me at the University of Alasaka, Anchorage.
