Old Seafordian Ken Morriss shares details of his rewarding career with us in the Global Gaming Industry.
I left Seaford around 1960 and started work at the London Stock Exchange as a “dealer”. After changing jobs a few times to try out different occupations I realized that working in an office was not my thing.
In 1974 I started training as a casino croupier in London at Charlie Chester’s Casino. After two years I transferred to London Playboy Casino and was transferred to Nassau Bahamas in 1977 when they opened there. In 1980 I was offered a job as Casino Manager on a cruise ship and stayed with that company until 1992, ending up as Director of Casino Operations and in charge of 31 different shipboard casinos.
In 1992 I left and formed my own Casino Consulting Company, which became very successful and lasted over 10 years. I was part owner of two casinos in Russia and one casino ship sailing out of Galveston Texas. 911 just about killed my entire business, so I went to work in Mississippi on a Riverboat casino. After two years I was promoted to Assistant GM on the Bally’s riverboat in New Orleans and moved there five weeks before hurricane Katrina destroyed the entire city. I lost everything except one truck and my dogs.
I moved to Las Vegas and after about six months was contacted by a headhunter and offered the job I have now.
I’m Director of Casino Operations in Panama City, Republic of Panama. We have the biggest casino in the country. I’m married to a Panamanian girl; we have two small children, one house just outside the city and a weekend house up in the mountains.
This business has taken me to 54 different countries around the world, I have been on radio chat shows, I’m on the Board of Directors of a University here and lecture on this industry, I’ve had numerous articles printed and still enjoy every minute of it.
